There are so many funeral poems that are used over and again in funerals, memorials and other farewell services. Some because they have made a list of ‘most common’ or ‘top ten’ funeral poems and some for good reason… because they are beautifully written and capture the feelings of those left behind.
As a specialist funeral celebrant I am often asked to share some of those much loved poems. And sometimes it is a delight and honour to be able to find a piece of poetry or prose that is a wonderful fit for a loved one.
And this one by Australian poet Frances Hackney, from “Kindle Me A Star” is one of my personal favourites – that to date, I have not seen make the list of common and most used funeral poems. The families who have had it included in their loved one’s farewells have loved it! What do you think?
When they have pronounced me dead
You will weep
And long to contact me again.
Do not ask the wind for news of me.
He is a vagrant gossip and most
Do not search
Along the starry reaches
Of night’s milky stream.
I shall not be there:
Nor shall I lie deep hidden
In the secretive ocean.
But when your tears are dry
And grief is calm,
Be still awhile and listen,
Listen to your spirit’s silence.
Summon me softly,
And I shall rise
Intact and beautiful,
From the depths of your faithful heart –
My dwelling place
Until your life shall end.
We have just one life…
